Reviews:

” …Steve Lawson manages to pepper in intentionally humorous dialogue and moments without breaking the tonal consistency of the film and the result of this is a film that is comfortable with its limitations while maximising those areas that don’t cost money – namely decent writing and great timing.” Midlands Movies

“Raven Lee returns as Dyer and spends the majority of the film either being tortured, in a state of undress getting plenty of ‘lady love’ or wreathing orgasmically on her bed like she has ants in her pants […] Overall Hellriser has loads going for it such as the obligatory blood, boobs, chopped up bodies and plenty of dry ice to give it bags of atmosphere.” The Man with the Plan

Transhuman is a 2017 British science fiction horror film written and directed by Nicholas Winter. It stars Marc BannermanSteven Berkoff and Toyah Frantzen.

A young journalist delves into the underbelly of a transhumanist cult and discovers that it spans generations leading back to the Nazi’s during World War 2…

Reviews:

“Nothing really makes sense in Transhuman, which is a shame as the movie at least has ideas, and is occasionally filmed with a sharp eye. However, like its ungainly, biologically-refitted mutants, it’s a hot-potch that clunks along, leaving us with the lingering, unconsummated question: ‘What were they thinking?’” Benjamin Poole, The Movie Waffler

“It’s as if the filmmakers had some actors they wanted to work with and some lovely Spanish locations at their disposal and just cooked up a story to fit around them. But the story is ultra-thin, and so director Nicolas Winter fills the film with scenes of discussing where to go next, driving to that place, walking around that place, with morose orchestral music forever in the background.” Elliott Maguire, UK Horror Scene

“The characters lacked charisma. The bad guy was dorky. Things don’t pick up until the film is half over and by then you are numb with the Alex and Cassie (Rebecca Scott) story which dragged on. When the action does happen I had to ask after half a century or so, this guy has managed to “build an army” of what? A half dozen guys or so?” The Movie Guy

‘Welcome to the jungle’

Zombie Isle is a 2014 American horror film written and directed by Robert Elkins (Alien Swamp BeastZombie Croc; Backwoods 2: The Revenge of Caleb). It stars Tony Jones, Alyssa Wheaton and Kyle Billeter.

In the late 70’s, a group of college students and their professor venture onto an uninhabited island for a day of exploring flora, fauna and co-ed fun.

The class field trip quickly becomes a grisly nightmare as the students and faculty soon discover they are stranded and the island is crawling with ravenous, flesh-eating ghouls, reanimated as zombies by an insane Nazi scientist who can resurrect and control the dead.

Just when the slaughter levels out, a three-headed abomination comes out of hiding that even its creator can’t control…

Reviews:

” …even if the tongue is firmly in cheek in Zombie Isle, it stays away from ever becoming just moronic but remains a loving (if ironic) homage throughout. So fans of of vintage grindhouse cinema will probably find a lot to like about this movie…” Mike Haberfelner, Search My Trash

“There are moments when the effects are flubbed, mostly by showing the practical effect technique or aspect to clearly, giving away the illusion, but for the most part things work. The color effect and 70’s retro effect can be a bit distracting, but the sound effects dissolve any annoyance and really set things right…” A Southern Horror Fan

Jonathan – aka Vampire stern nicht – is a 1969 West German horror feature film directed by Hans W. Geißendörfer. The Iduna Film production stars Jürgen Jung, Hans-Dieter Jendreyko and Paul Albert Krumm. The impressive cinematography is provided by Robby Muller who later worked extensively with Wim Wenders.

jonathan 1

Linking the rise of fascism to vampirism, the film takes place in the 19th century where vampires who are immune to sunlight have taken over the world. Human rebels band together for a battle of life and the control of the civilization…

jonathan 2

Jonathan has only recently received a legitimate DVD release on the German Kinowelt label, unfortunately without English subtitles. Its slow arty approach may not be to all tastes but to many it represents a “lost classic” being heavily featured in many 1970’s reference books.

jonathan 3

Reviews:

“The performances are for the most part merely functional with Jung not a particularly compelling protagonist; he’s not a bad actor, he’s just not given much to do than lead the audience through vignettes. As the Count, Krumm has his moments but he is less effective when speaking at length. Only Jendreyko’s performance could be described as lively…” Eric Cotenas, lovelockandload.net

j4

“Essentially an art film, Jonathan is guilty of a few serious longueurs, together with some wilfully obtuse details. The vampires are attended by lilac-clad little girls whose synchronised movements are unintentionally comic, and scenes featuring a wheezing woodland hermit who decorates his shack with inverted crosses are trial to watch. Jonathan Rigby, Euro Gothic

“The best part of this film is the look of it. This is one of those movies that amazes you with every shot. No matter what is going on, silly or serious, it all looks great. It sucks you in simply because you want to see the images that pass before your eyes. This film has tracking shots and haunting images that will stay with me forever”  D.B. Borroughsjonathan 2

“It just had a bunch of people in bad vampire makeup mumbling some political propaganda. My audience took it seriously — at first.” Wayne Malin

‘Stop the unstoppable’

Overlord is a 2018 American supernatural action horror feature film directed by Julius Avery from a screenplay by Billy Ray and Mark L. Smith. J.J. Abrams (Cloverfield) and Lindsey Weber are producers.

The Bad Robot Productions movie stars Wyatt Russell, Bokeem Woodbine, Pilou Asbæk, Iain De Caestecker, John Magaro, Jacob Anderson and Hélène Cardona.

On the eve of D-Day, American paratroopers are dropped behind enemy lines to carry out a mission crucial to the invasion’s success. However, as they approach their target, they begin to realise there is more going on in this Nazi-occupied village than a simple military operation. They find themselves fighting against supernatural forces, part of a Nazi experiment…

Reviews:

“One just wishes that the film would have taken a few more risks with its storytelling since the premise is so far out there. As it stands, it’s a solid film that never reaches further than it has to, but if you’re looking for a Nazi-killing gore-fest, then you’re bound to find something to like here.” Trace Thurman, Bloody Disgusting

” …it seems reluctant to fully commit to the monster bit, wavering between B-movie glory and a straight up soldier story. There are flourishes of fabulously gnarly practical effects and disturbing mad scientist designs but only tastes, never a whole meal. The film also plays pretty fast and loose with the rules of its sci-fi wonders…” Haleigh Foutch, Collider

“Pairing some of the spirit of schlocky Nazi-sploitation fare with a top-flight young cast and better-than-solid filmmaking, the movie is more mainstream that the midnight fare it sounds like on paper, if only by a bit. Horror fans should cheer, as will admirers of the ensemble’s up-and-coming cast.” John DeFore, The Hollywood Reporter

“Yes, this is a B-movie produced with studio resources about American soldiers battling Nazi zombies in WWII. But despite some underdeveloped characters and obvious B-movie tropes, Overlord goes beyond the call of duty with a riveting story that digs far deeper than this material usually goes for.” Kalyn Corrigan, IndieWire

“It’s mysterious, action-packed, funny, rousing and purely enjoyable. All things we’ve come to know and love Abrams for packing into his productions. But that’s not to take anything away from director Julius Avery. While Abrams gave him the ball to run with, and surely some guidance along the way, Avery establishes himself here as a man who carries a certain edge.” Ryan Scott, Movieweb

‘From Beauty to BEAST!’

She Demons is a 1958 American horror film directed and co-written by Richard E. Cunha (Missile to the Moon; Frankenstein’s Daughter). Made in a tongue-in-cheek style of Men’s adventure magazines, Nazisploitation and Island of Lost Souls, the film was distributed by Astor Pictures as a double feature with Cunha’s Giant from the Unknown. It stars Irish McCalla (Hands of a Stranger), Tod Griffin, Victor Sen Yung (TV’s Night Gallery), Rudolph Anders (The Snow Creature; Frankenstein 1970) and Gene Roth (Attack of the Giant Leeches).

During a tropical storm a pleasure boat is shipwrecked on an uncharted island and presumed sunk with all hands. The radio possessed by the four survivors can only receive but not transmit and they discover the island will soon be used by naval aircraft as a bombing target.

Screen Shot 2014-07-06 at 00.36.33

Finding strange human footprints and hearing the sound of drums, three of the party explore the island that they discover is populated by deformed humanoids who are the product of scientific experiments by a party of Nazis led by a mad scientist war criminal who rules the island…

Reviews:

She Demons has become a full-blown cult classic. Richard Cunha has packed a lot of schlock into his 76 minutes of low-budget mayhem – laughable dialogue, Nazis who flog girls, a mad scientist called “The Butcher”, a hurricane, ugly female monsters wearing cheap rubber masks, island castaways, a volcanic eruption, a henchman named Igor (played by Gene Roth, one time Three Stooges villain), stock footage from One Million BC, bombs, female sex serum, stereotypical racist gags, campy dancing by cute native girls, a not-too-hunky hero who just happens to be a scientist, and Irish McCalla in a cocktail gown… ” Terrororstralis

“Slow pacing intrudes during the final third … but don’t let that keep you from the many highlights, including scantily-clad dancing jungle girls, stock footage of every possible natural disaster you can think of, a “stone” wall that shakes when somebody slams into it, an obvious stunt double, a disappearing/reappearing bikini top on a torture victim, and, of course, the ridiculously disgusting-looking “demons”. David Ellroy Goldweber, Claws & Saucers

Screen Shot 2014-07-06 at 00.32.48

“Caves are provided by lots of stone walls made from crumpled paper, and a few angles once again in Bronson Caves. All are filmed flatly, using the fewest camera setups necessary to display the action. It’s all there: silly native dances that look like watered-down burlesque, the stunt double for Tod Griffin who has completely a mismatched build and hair, and stock Germans that prance around in shiny uniforms that should have worn out years before.” Glenn Erickson, DVD Talk

Screen Shot 2014-07-06 at 01.12.31

“Far better production values than the majority of drive-in jungle pictures, but with all the clichés thankfully intact; ominously distant drums, choreographed blue-eyed native dancing slave girls in skimpy outfits, the love-hate guy/girl thing, a mad German scientist, a rich-bitch blonde in tight-fitting clothes, zombies washing up on shore, Nazi’s … it’s hard to go wrong with uniformed Nazi’s.” Willard’s Wormholes

‘Frozen alive for 20 years! Now they return from their icy graves to seek vengeance!’

The Frozen Dead is a 1966 British science fiction horror feature film written, produced and directed by Herbert J. Leder (It!; Doomsday Machine; Fiend Without a Face). The movie stars Dana Andrews, Anna Palk and Philip Gilbert.

Hammer horror regulars Don Banks (The Evil of Frankenstein; The Reptile; The Mummy’s Shroud) composed the strident score, whilst Scott MacGregor (Taste the Blood of Dracula; The Vampire Lovers; Frankenstein and the Monster from Hell)provided the art direction. Although shot in Eastmancolor, US distributors Warner-Seven Arts chose to release it in black and white to save money duplicating prints!

Frozen-Dead-Nazi-soldiers-1966

For twenty years, unrepentant Nazi scientist Doctor Norberg (Dana Andrews) has been experimentally thawing frozen Nazi soldiers who have been kept in suspended animation at his English country estate since the end of World War II. He is awaiting his superiors, General Lubeck (Karel Stepanek) and Captain Tirptiz (Basil Henson), who have been told by Norberg’s assistant Karl (Alan Tilvern) that Norberg’s experiments have been a complete success.

Unfortunately, they haven’t been. Norberg can thaw the body but not the brain. All he can produce are zombie-like beings who can do no more than endlessly repeat the memory of just one action from their past. The worst of them, Prisoner no. 3 (Edward Fox), is extremely violent. And is Norberg’s brother….

Reviews:

“We’re only treated to one rampaging Nazi zombie (as played by Edward Fox, no less), but even he’s a bit crap. However, it’s worth noting that the “Elsa’s head in a box” scenes are incredibly effective, and almost make it worth seeking out the film by themselves. Bathed in an eerie blue light and glaring balefully at her captors, she’s the real star of the show.” British Horror Films

“Dana Andrews is actually quite good in this mess, giving his character of Dr. Norberg some layers that went above and beyond the call of duty for a film of this caliber. Character actor Alan Tilvern plays a goofy Igor-like character who manages to spice things up by going bat-guano crazy. It’s too bad the rest of the movie didn’t give these two more to work with.” Victor Medina, Cinelinx

frozendead15

The Brain That Wouldn’t Die is noteworthy for Virginia Leith’s talkative, taunting performance as that film’s body-less head. In The Frozen Dead, the honor goes to Kathleen Breck as the hapless Elsa. Her subtler, more tortured and mostly mimed performance is actually quite good, in unrealistic surroundings realistically expressing the horror of finding oneself disembodied and at the mercy of loopy scientists.” Stewart Galbraith IV, DVD Talk

Frozen-Dead-screamer

“Seriously, folks: despite being an enjoyably bad B-movie, The Frozen Dead has a somewhat disturbing quality to it that won’t let you forget about it. But, of course, on the upside, we do get to see a wall of severed arms come to life and strangle Nazis. I mean, you can’t go wrong with that, right?” Luigi Bastardo, Cinema Sentries

“The best things about this unscary movie are the art direction and the living head which features prominently in the production.” Alan Frank, The Horror Film Handbook
